Considering an open-source JasperReports alternative?
Open Reports is a self-hosted reporting engine with a browser-based visual designer. It is designed for teams that want to create and render reports from applications, including letting their own users edit layouts.
Open Reports uses its own JSON report definition and rendering engine. JRXML import is partial: imported files become editable drafts with conversion notes, and output must be reviewed against the source report. Existing `.jasper` compiled files do not run in Open Reports.
Keep JasperReports where you rely on behavior Open Reports has not implemented or parity-tested.
How the approaches differ
- Design: Open Reports provides a browser designer that can run standalone or be embedded in an application. JasperReports Community Edition includes the Jaspersoft Studio desktop designer; JasperReports Web Studio is offered in Jaspersoft's commercial edition and can run standalone or plug into JasperReports Server. See Jaspersoft product editions.
- Definition: Open Reports uses versionable JSON definitions. JasperReports uses JRXML source and compiled `.jasper` artifacts.
- Integration: Open Reports exposes a REST render API and web components. The host application can own report definitions, data, authentication, and persistence. JasperReports offers a Java library, while Jaspersoft IO provides its own REST-based product; compare deployment and licensing needs.
- Migration: JRXML can be imported as a starting point, with per-feature statuses such as converted, needs review, and unsupported. This does not establish full Jasper feature or PDF parity.
Where Open Reports may fit
Evaluate it when you want an MIT-licensed, JSON-native workflow where your application can own report definitions and persistence, and you can embed a browser designer or call a render API. Jaspersoft also offers a web designer, so compare the required edition, licensing, and integration model rather than assuming web design is unique to either product.
It supports PDF, Word, Excel, HTML, CSV, ZPL and ESC/POS output. Check the current examples and migration notes for the exact behavior your reports need.
Try one report before planning a migration
- Choose one representative report and its real data shape.
- Import the JRXML and resolve every review or unsupported item.
- Render the same input in both systems and compare page setup, pagination, fonts, images, and values.
- Keep the original Jasper path available until your acceptance criteria pass.
See the JRXML import scope, the embedding guide, or the JSON render API example.
